India’s largest two wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp ltd is all geared up to pass Yamaha in year 2012. It is expected that Hero may surpass Yamaha in terms of numbers of units sold all over the world by few thousand units. Hero Motocorp is all set to grab the second spot following its former partner Honda Motor Corporation of Japan.
However, Hero has always claimed that it is the number one two wheeler company in the world but it is true only if you take it via single company method. Hero is the largest bike manufacturer in the world which sales over 6 million units of motorbikes in a single year. The next spot is taken by PT Astra Honda Motor of Indonesia with the sale of over 4.27 million units worldwide and the third spot is withheld by Bajaj Auto ltd with 3.8 million sales units.
But if holding company is considered then Hero doesn’t remains at the first spot. With the holding company method the foremost spot is held by Honda Motor Corporation of Japan with 12 million units of sales and is followed by the Yamaha Motor Corporation of Japan with 7 million units (All data from year 2011).
Both Honda and Yamaha operate in various countries through several subsidiary companies and joint ventures due to which the single company sale figures are not as high as Hero. Last year, Hero got the third spot after Yamaha Motor Corporation with a difference of just 0.86 million units. Both the companies boasted to enhanced figure for 2012-13, Hero expected to sell about 7 million units and Yamaha claimed to get sale figure around 8.3 million units. But the slow market affected both the companies.
If we compared Hero MotoCorp with Yamaha, it is in better position to grab the second spot. Hero has recorded more than 5 lakhs units in India only and for the year 2012 company has registered a sale of about 6.12 million units. The figure may be little lower than expected but it still is enough to compete with Yamaha Motor Corporation that sold about 4.52 million units for the first nice month of the 2012. Although company has yet not revealed the total sale numbers, but we expect it to be around 6.05 million, about 25% lower than the expected figure.
It will be interesting to note if Yamaha will retain its second spot or will lose it to Hero MotoCorp. The whole thing will become clear once Yamaha will roll out its sale figure for Q4.
