Chennai would soon be bracing a Royal Enfield plant in Oragadam. Rapid growth in sales has prompted Royal Enfield to invest Rs. 350 crores in its new plant to meet supplier constraints and demands. Royal Enfield India has a full fledged production unit already at Thiruvottiyur, Chennai. The news broke about a month ago about the establishment of this new plant. Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has accepted the proposal and allotted the land to Siddhartha Lal, CEO and MD, Eicher Motors, for the company’s expansion. Royal Enfield bikes are grown steadily in popularity with addition of new bikes to its portfolio like the Classic 350 and Classic 500 in India. However, the biggest inconvenience reported by its customers, is the long waiting period for their bikes. By late afternoon on Sunday, our team at Indiandrives converged at the Big Mall grounds on Ghodbunder Road, Thane to witness the annual vintage auto show organised by the Heritage Vehicle Owner’s Club of Thane. The event was a feast for all auto enthusiasts, showcasing 10 vintage cars and 18 vintage bikes, all from the model years 1923 to 1983. While the vintage car display was dominated by American and British manufacturers, the vintage bike segment did feature Indian manufacturers albeit a few. According to recent reports Royal Enfield looks set at launching a carbureted variant of their Classic 500 UCE soon. Because of this launch, the deliveries of the Classic 500 UCE have also been stalled, even as they were gearing up to launch it an upgraded variant.
