Currently the Indian market has got three major players producing scooters and those are Honda, Hero MotoCorp and TVS. Out of this, Hero MotoCorp has got only a scooter in its portfolio and the company is planning to double the production of its scooters. Scooters is where the Japanese giant Honda has an enviable share in the Indian market and Hero MotoCorp are looking to beat Honda at its own game.
Hero MotoCorp plans to capture atleast 35 percent of the market share for scooters. With Bajaj out of the game and Yamaha still fiddling with the plans of launching scooters in India, it is but natural that Hero can take advantage of the situation and get going at a fair clip. 500 crores is the investment which Hero MotoCorp is looking to invest within the next 1-2 years. About 96% of the sales of Hero MotoCorp are handled by its econo commuters, the pair of Splendor and Passion range of motorcycles. As of now, the Gurgaon plant of Hero MotoCorp handles the scooter department and the scooter production would remain in that plant only.
