Italian auto manufacturer, Piaggio plans to make a comeback in the two wheeler market with its Vespa scooters. Even though they are yet to launch the scooters, the company has already announced that they plan on doubling their manufacturing capacities for the scooter for addressing volume segment.
The company plans to do this along with bringing premium bikes to India that they displayed in Bombay, early this year. The company’s managing director and chairman, Ravi Chopra, was quoted as saying that they see a lot of opportunity for their scooters in the Indian two wheeler that continues to grow. As a result, they will be doubling their capacities for scooter production from 1.5 lakh a year for their Vespa scooter, to 3 lakh a year by 2013′s first half.

They are also seeing growth in the bike markets upper end, in premium and executive segments in comparison to economy and entry segments. They are therefore evaluating on the feasibility of launching upper end motorcycles keeping the growth in this category in mind.
