Hero Honda were the first to inject FI into its products even before the TVS RTR FI and Honda Stunner FI could do so and while the Pulsar 220 DTS-FI was still in production. It was really a bold decision by Hero Honda, which took the first step of injecting FI into its bikes, which was called Hero Honda Glamour FI. Hero Honda Glamour FI in India was introduced as the first fuel injected bike.
Bikes like Hero Honda Glamour and Super Splendor made it to the market and the sales were alarming as before. The Hero Honda Glamour FI in India has the same engine, but with fuel injection technology.
To begin with, the Hero Honda Glamour FI in India is a pretty neat looking bike with the shortest wheelbase of around 1265 mm. Riding position makes it a perfect looking bike as well as offers a more comfortable feeling to ride with 240 mm front disc brakes.
The Hero Honda Glamour FI in India has a comfortable step up pillion seat arrangement. Damp surfaces make the front end to slide when pushed hard, but nevertheless a character these bikes hone. MRF tyres are doing a reasonably good job on the bike. Complaints regarding any of the Honda bikes are rare. People do not have bad reviews to say about any of its makes. Comfort and fuel efficient bikes are their main features, and they strive hard to bring in the results year in and year out. The downside of this bike is that it produces only 9 bhp of power given that the engine falls in the 125 cc category. There would always be a doubt in a buyer’s mind when they compare the power produced by other bikes in this category, which is a bit more. The Hero Honda Glamour FI reaches 0 to 60 km per hour in 7.4 seconds! Come on, we are not talking about fast or super bikes here, but just the friendly, fuel efficient bikes Honda produce keeping in mind various thoughts a buyer has before going for a decent bike in India.
Design and Styling
The Hero Honda Glamour may be a bit over-styled and bright, but it does match with the current new age trend. Chequered flag as one would see in either MotoGP or F1 is visible on its tank. Other than the new look it has, it is pretty much an over-modified version of the Hero Honda Glamour. The rear view mirrors are body coloured wherein they could have simply painted it black and that would have made the bikes look better. One can say they have just improved the styling of the prior Glamour to the max. The bike also features extended tank scoops, clear lens indictor, grab rails which are again body coloured and a black engine.
The instrument panel houses the chrome ringed speedometer which is pleasing with a red background. It also features the fuel guage. The silencer is also painted black along with black alloy wheels. Hero Honda has always made customers happy by giving them dependent, low maintenance cost bikes.
The mileage of the Hero Honda Glamour FI is around 75 km per litre. Fuel efficiency is directly related to how riders handle the bike, so it varies with individual riding. The advanced swirl flow induction system sticker is visible. According to Honda, swirling motion of the air and fuel mixture is perfect in the combustion chamber of the engine for better and effective burning of fuel resulting in overall better fuel economy and less emissions.
The Hero Honda Glamour FI in India perhaps was a rushed-in creation to unveil its fuel injection technology into the market. I think they should have done more research on the fuel injection technology, but the idea of showing it first created all the chaos here. The power of 9 bhp is very less compared to bikes in the 125 cc category, which are capable of generating more power in this segment. On closer inspection, the Hero Honda Glamour FI looks pretty much the same as the Hero Honda Glamour, but with the chequered flag graphics and other cosmetic patch works added to it, it gives the bike a brighter look.
It also shares similar technical specifications with its carburetted version. The only identification it has is the logo of the PGM-FI. The Hero Honda Glamour has a smaller fuel tank. Fuel guage is digital. The advantages the FI bikes carry are emissions are reduced and mileage is increased. There are certain advantages of the FI over the conventional engines. The technology is called the PGM-FI or programmed fuel injection. It consists of five sensors that closely monitor how the engine operates and keeps vigilance on instantaneous air entry, engine oil temperature, position of throttle response, temperature of air intake and the angle of the crankshaft.
The ECU or the electronic control unit then reads the data and makes the necessary calculations needed for adequate amount of fuel needed to inject to potentially optimize the air-to-fuel ratio. As a result of this technology, we can expect a smoother ride with better fuel efficiency. The hydrocarbon emissions are lowered by almost a third, and we can take the pride of riding a less polluting bike. The bike also features a real time mileage indicator, which reads the amount of fuel consumed and distance ridden and displays the average mileage for the previous 10 seconds. So, fuel efficiency is never compromised as a result.
The bike also features the bank angle sensor. What is a bank angle sensor? When in a situation the bike stops or rolls over, the bank angle sensor automatically cuts off ignition and thereby shutting the fuel pump. The advantage of this system is that the bike would not catch fire in such incidents. This is an excellent safety feature on this bike. These bikes also have a malfunction indicator lamp that indicates the malfunctioning in the PGM-FI system through a red FI lamp fitted above the LCD fuel guage.
Other than the PGM-FI technology, colourful graphics, the bank angle sensor, there is not much the Hero Honda Glamour FI bike offers, but fuel efficiency is not compromised and emission reduction is another advantage of this bike. There have been a few setbacks regarding the fuel injection technology. Necessary periodic maintenance is a concern and success rates on these bikes is a bit low. Again, the pricing of these FI enhanced bikes are close to the 150 cc bike price. Overall, the bike gives fuel injection technology experience if one is willing to pay the price.
